Bluejay Softball Team Drops Two to Open Season

ORANGE, Calif. - The Elmhurst College softball team opened up the 2007 season by dropping a pair of games at the Sun West Tournament in California. The Bluejays were held hitless in a 9-0 loss to the University of St. Thomas and then dropped a 6-1 contest to the College of St. Catherine.
ST. THOMAS 9, ELMHURST 0 - Three St. Thomas pitchers combined to no-hit the Bluejays in Elmhurst's season opener. Maria Bye, Kallie Samuelson and Brittany Bruzek combined to work six innings of no-hit ball. The trio scattered two walks and fanned 10. Bye worked 4.1 innings and struck out nine.
St. Thomas banged out 11 hits and took advantage of six walks and three errors by the Bluejays. Jaci Hall (Aurora/Waubonsie Valley) took the loss, allowing 11 hits and six walks while surrendering nine runs (only five earned).
ST. CATHERINE 6, ELMHURST 1 - St. Catherine's Jessica Lewandowski scattered five hits and allowed only one run and struck out five while walking none.
Ashley Grice (Kirkwood, Mo./H.S) doubled home Elmhurst's only run in the seventh inning.
Vanessa Kalal (Montgomery/Oswego) took the loss, throwing five innings and allowing seven hits and three walks. She allowed six runs (only two earned) and struck out five. The Elmhurst defense committed six errors in the loss.
