Bluejay Softball Team Splits Pair at Cornell

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The Elmhurst College softball team closed out the 2009 season by splitting a pair of games at Cornell College.
Elmhurst closed out the season with a 14-22 overall record after taking game one 10-2, and dropping game two 9-5.
ELMHURST 10, CORNELL 2 (Game One) - Elmhurst jumped out to a 5-1 lead and scored five times in the top of the sixth to score a 10-2 victory.
Cornell (19-20) scored a run in the bottom of the first to take the early lead, but the Bluejays answered back with three runs in the third inning. Michele Fournier tripled home a pair of runs and then scored on a Gina Venier RBI groundout.
The Bluejays tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth when Maggie Yagen blasted a two-run home run.
Elmhurst put the game out of reach in the sixth by plating five runs. Mo Roderick started the scoring with an RBI single, and Rachel Pietrucha followed with a two-run single. Kendra Ostrander added an RBI base hit and the Bluejays tacked on a final run on a Cornell error.
Venier led the Bluejays with three hits. She scored a run and drove home a run in the win. Yagen finished 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI. Pietrucha also finished 2-for-4 with a pair driven in. Melissa McCarthy added two hits for the Bluejays.
Vanessa Kalal (5-9) scored the win for Elmhurst. She scattered 10 hits and two walks over six innings. She allowed two earned runs and struck out a pair.
CORNELL 9, ELMHURST 5 (Game Two) - Cornell jumped out to a 7-1 lead and hung on to score a 9-5 win in the second game of a doubleheader.
Elmhurst grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second after three errors on Cornell. The lead was short lived as Cornell's Nicole Duncan smashed a three-run homer to give Cornell a 3-1 lead.
Cornell tacked on four runs in the fifth inning to take a commanding 7-1 lead. Elmhurst closed the gap in the top of the sixth by plating four runs. Roderick started the scoring with an RBI single. Pietrucha followed with a run-scoring single and then Fournier hit a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit down to three. Venier added an RBI double to bring Elmhurst to within two, but Cornell scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull away and earn the win.
Lindsay Nauman (6-11) took the loss for Elmhurst. She allowed seven hits and seven runs in 4.2 innings of work. She walked seven and struck out six.
