Softball Team Splits a Pair at Sun West Tourney
ORANGE, Calif. - The Elmhurst College softball team moved to 3-3 on the season after splitting a pair of games at the Sun West Tournament in California. The Bluejays knocked off the College of St. Catherine 4-3 and fell to Amherst College 12-4.
ELMHURST 4, ST. CATHERINE 3 - The Bluejays won their third straight game by edging the College of St. Catherine 4-3.
Elmhurst trailed 1-0 before breaking through in the third inning. Rachel Pietrucha (Orland Hills-Andrew) smacked a two-out triple to drive home a pair of runs. Pietrucha came home to score on an error.
St. Catherine trimmed the lead down to 3-2 with a run in the fourth inning, but Elmhurst answered back in the sixth inning when Hillary Pietrucha (Orland Hills-Andrew) singled home a run.
St. Catherine pulled to within a run in the seventh inning and had the bases loaded with two down, but Jaci Hall (Aurora-Waubonsie Valley) induced a pop up to end the game.
Hillary Pietrucha led the offense with three hits.
Vanessa Kalal (Montgomery-Oswego) earned the win, pitching 6.2 innings and allowing three runs on 10 hits. Hall earned the save.
AMHERST 12, ELMHURST 4 - Elmhurst fell behind 6-0 before pushing home four runs in the fifth inning. An RBI double by Hillary Pietrucha and a two-RBI triple from Rachel Pietrucha sparked the Elmhurst offense in the fifth.
Amherst answered back, scoring five runs in the sixth inning and tacking on an insurance run in the top of the seventh.
Jessica Kalal (Lisle-H.S.) took the loss, pitching 4.1 innings and giving up four runs on nine hits. Hall was tagged for eight runs on 12 hits in relief.
