Bluejay Softball Team Drops Pair to Wheaton

ELMHURST, Ill. The Elmhurst College softball team fell to 4-8 in CCIW play following a pair of losses to Wheaton College. Wheaton took game one 12-9 and scored an 8-6 win in game number two.
Elmhurst fell to 12-19 overall while Wheaton moved to 17-19 overall and 3-7 in league play.
WHEATON 12, ELMHURST 9 - Elmhurst fought back from a seven-run deficit to pull to within a run after four innings, but the Bluejays fell to Wheaton 12-9.
A two-base error on the Bluejays led to four runs for Wheaton in the first inning. Elmhurst answered back with three runs in the bottom of the first thanks to a two-run double by Beth Cann (Peotone/H.S.) and an RBI single from Amanda Bowlin (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette).
Wheaton grabbed a 10-3 lead by scoring four in the second and a run in the third and fourth. Elmhurst mounted a six-run rally in the bottom of the fourth to pull to within a run. A two-run single by Rachel Pietrucha (Orland Hills/Andrew) started the scoring for the Bluejays. Rachel Hartman (Collinsville, Mo./H.S.) added an RBI single and Jill Karsa (Downers Grove/Downers Grove North) smacked a three-run double to cap the scoring.
Wheaton added two runs in the seventh to pull away for the 12-9 win.
Bowlin, Karsa and Maureen Roderick (Alton/H.S.) all recorded two hits apiece in the loss.
Vanessa Kalal (Montgomery/Oswego) took the loss from the circle. She was tagged for 10 hits and eight earned runs in 3.2 innings of work. She walked four while striking out one.
WHEATON 8, ELMHURST 6 - A four-run fourth inning helped Wheaton overcome an early 4-2 deficit and earn the 8-6 win.
Trailing 2-0 in the third, Elmhurst struck for four runs to take a 4-2 lead. The inning was sparked by a a two run single from Becca Zumpf (Frankfort/Lincoln-Way East).
Wheaton answered back with a run in the third and a four-run fourth inning to take 7-4 lead. Elmhurst pulled to within a run in the fifth inning when Zumpf roped an RBI triple and scored on a sacrifice fly off of Cann's bat.
The Thunder added an insurance run in the sixth to earn the 8-6 victory.
Zumpf led the way with a 2-for-4 day at the plate with two runs scored and three driven in. Bowlin and Roderick each banged out two hits apiece in the loss.
Jaci Hall (Naperville/Waubonsie Valley) suffered the loss. Hall surrendered 10 hits and seven earned runs in six innings. She walked a pair and struck out five.
