Bluejay Softball Team Wins Seventh Straight

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College softball team ran its winning streak to seven games by sweeping both ends of a doubleheader from Clarke College. Elmhurst (12-15 overall) took game one 5-4 and scored a 4-1 victory in the night cap.
ELMHURST 5, CLARKE 4 - A three-run sixth inning propelled the Bluejays to a 5-4 win over Clarke (15-17 overall).
Trailing by a pair and with two outs in the inning, Maureen Roderick (Alton/H.S.) belted her first home run of the season, a two-run shot, to even the score at 4-4. Jill Karsa (Downers Grove/Downers Grove South) followed with a pinch-hit single. Tia Martini (Addison/Driscoll Catholic) reentered the game to run and promptly stole second. Becca Zumpf (Frankfort/Lincoln-Way East) grounded an infield single to second that scored Martini from second and put the Bluejays on top 5-4.
Elmhurst grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning after Amanda Bowlin (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette) roped a two-run double. Clarke grabbed the lead with a three-run second inning and tacked on a run in the fourth, setting up the Bluejays' sixth-inning rally.
Elmhurst banged out 10 hits in the win with Bowlin, Roderick, Zumpf and Lauren Ventrella (Orland Hills/Andrew) all recording two hits apiece. Bowlin and Roderick each drove in two in the win.
Vanessa Kalal (Montgomery/Oswego) earned the win, improving to 7-6 on the season. She scattered seven hits while allowing four runs in seven innings. She walked three and struck out six.
ELMHURST 4, CLARKE 1 - The Bluejays banged out 12 hits while scoring their seventh straight victory.
Elmhurst grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second when Rachel Hartman (Collinsville, Mo./H.S.) singled home Michelle Fournier (Oak Lawn/Richards), who led off the inning with a triple.
After Clarke evened the score with a run in the third, the Bluejays reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Roderick led off the inning with a triple and scored when Ventrella grounded into a fielder's choice.
The Bluejays tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI ground out from Beth Cann (Peotone/H.S.) and a run-scoring single from Bowlin.
Bowlin finished 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI while Cann and Roderick added two hits apiece.
Jaci Hall (Naperville/Waubonsie Valley) earned the win from the circle. Hall allowed only one run on nine hits. She worked out of jams on multiple occasions, holding Clarke to only one hit in 14 at bats with runners in scoring position. She walked two and struck out one.
