Bluejay Softball Team Rallies Past Dominican
Box Score
ELMHURST, Ill. - Vanessa Kalal (Montgomery/Oswego) smacked a walk-off two-out single to cap a five-run seventh inning rally as the Bluejay softball team toppled Dominican University 6-5.
Trailing 5-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Bluejays took advantage of three Dominican errors to mount a five-run rally. With one run in and runners at second and third, a dropped fly ball helped extend the Bluejay rally. A Beth Cann (Peotone/H.S.) single cut the deficit down to one. Amanda Bowlin (Ballwin, Mo./H.S.) was intentionally walked to load the bases and set up a force play. After a shallow fly out to center and a pop out to short, the Bluejays were down to their last out with Kalal coming to the plate. Kalal delivered the game-winning hit by roping a single back up the middle to drive in Becca Zumpf (Frankfort/Lincoln-Way East) and Cann.
Kalal led the Bluejay offense with a 3-for-4 day at the plate and two runs driven in. Zumpf finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Kalal also earned the win from the circle. She worked seven innings and allowed five hits and five runs (four earned). She walked two and struck out eight while improving to 4-3 on the season.
The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was halted due to rain. The Bluejays were leading 6-1 in the bottom of the third when the game was stopped. The two teams will attempt to resume the second game at a later date.
