ORANGE, Calif. - The Elmhurst College softball team scored its first win of the 2008 season by splitting a pair of contests at the Sun West Tournament in California.  The Bluejays moved to 1-5 on the season after defeating La Sierra University 6-2 and then falling to CSU-Eastbay 8-5.

ELMHURST 6, LA SIERRA 2 - The Bluejays turned in their best all-around performance of the young season to earn their first win of the season. Elmhurst banged out seven hits and played error free ball to down La Sierra 6-2.

Lauren Ventrella (Orland Hills/Andrew) recorded a pair of the Bluejays' seven hits and drove in two runs to pace the Elmhurst offense. Michelle Fournier (Oak Lawn/Richards) and Vanessa Kalal (Montgomery/Oswego) each drove in a run in the win.

Kalal earned the win from the circle, scattering four hits and four walks in six innings of work. She held La Sierra to only two runs. Brenda Ferguson (Villa Park/Willowbrook) pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

CSU-EASTBAY 8, ELMHURST 5 - The Bluejay defense struggled, committing six errors leading to seven unearned runs for CSU-Eastbay.

Elmhurst led 4-0 after the first inning, but CSU-Eastbay scored five runs in the third inning on three hits and one Elmhurst error.

Jill Karsa (Downers Grove/Downers Grove South) spark the Bluejay offense by recording two of the squad's four hits. She singled home a run in the first and smashed a solo home run in the third.

Jaci Hall (Naperville/Waubonsie Valley) took the loss for the Bluejays. Hall allowed eight hits and eight runs (only one earned) in six innings of work. She walked five while striking out three.
