Softball Team Drops Pair of One Run Contests

ORANGE, Calif. - The Elmhurst college softball team slipped to 0-4 on the season following a pair of one run losses at the Sun West Tournament in California. Elmhurst fell to Williams College 7-6 in eight innings and then fell 6-5 to Pacific University.
WILLIAMS 7, ELMHURST 6 - Elmhurst led 5-2 heading into the seventh inning, but Williams scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings. The Bluejays scored in the top of the eighth, but Williams answered back with a pair of runs to earn the walk-off victory.
Defensive errors hurt the Bluejays in the final innings. An error in the seventh inning led to an unearned run, and a pair of Elmhurst errors in the eighth led to Williams earning the come-from-behind victory.
The Bluejays banged out nine hits in the loss and were led by two hits apiece from Amanda Bowlin (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette) and Rachel Hartman (Collinsville, Mo./H.S.).
Jaci Hall (Naperville/Waubonsie Valley) made the start for Elmhurst and earned a no-decision. Hall worked six innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits. She walked three and fanned six. Vanessa Kalal (Montgomery/Oswego) took the loss in relief. Kalal worked 1.2 innings and allowed only two unearned runs. She allowed one hit and walked three.
PACIFIC 6, ELMHURST 5 - The Bluejays led 5-1 after five innings, but allowed five runs in the sixth leading to a 6-5 win by Pacific.
Errors once again proved costly to the Bluejays as Elmhurst committed a pair of two-out errors in the sixth that kept the Pacific rally alive, leading to the five-run inning.
Bowlin and Rachel Pietrucha (Orland Hills/Andrew) each drove in a pair of runs in the loss.
Kalal started the game for Elmhurst and earned a no-decision. She worked 5.1 innings and scattered five hits and two earned runs. She walked four while striking out five. Hall took the loss in relief, allowing four hits and three runs (all unearned) in the 1.2 innings of work.
Elmhurst continues play in the Sun West Tournament on Monday, March 24.
