ORANGE, Calif. - The Elmhurst College softball team kicked off the 2008 season by dropping a pair of contests at the Sun West Tournament in California.

The Bluejays dropped a 6-3 game to Central College to open the season and then fell 6-3 to Knox College.

CENTRAL 6, ELMHURST 3 - Central jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning and never trailed en route to the 6-3 win. Elmhurst pulled to within a run at 4-3 in the top of the sixth, but Central pushed home a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to increase its lead.

Lauren Ventrella (Orland Hills/Andrew) led the Elmhurst offense by recording two of the Bluejays' six hits. She also scored a pair of runs.

Jaci Hall (Naperville/Waubonsie Valley) took the loss from the circle. Hall allowed 10 hits and six runs (five earned) in six innings of work. She walked three and struck out two.

KNOX 6, ELMHURST 3 - Elmhurst slipped to 0-2 after falling to Knox College 6-3. With the score even at 2-2 after five innings, Knox scored three times in the sixth and once in the seventh to pull away.

The Bluejays were held to only four hits in the loss. Jill Karsa (Downers Grove/Downers Grove South) sparked the Bluejays' with a two-run homer in the fifth inning.

Vanessa Kalal (Montgomery/Oswego) took the loss for the Bluejays. She allowed seven hits and six runs (three earned) in seven innings of work. She walked five and struck out seven in the loss.

Elmhurst plays a pair of games at the Sun West Tournament on Saturday, March 22.
