Four Bluejay Bowlers Earn Academic Honors
ELMHURST, Ill. - Four members of the Elmhurst College women's bowling team have been named to the National Tenpins Coaches Association (NTCA) All-Academic Team. Senior Becky Wright, sophomores Bethany Holden and Sarah Paul, and freshman Shannon Grimes were all honored by the NTCA.
In order to be eligible for the award, student-athletes were required to achieve a minimum grade-point average of 3.40 for the 2008-09 academic year. The NTCA is comprised of NCAA head bowling coaches.
Wright, a senior nursing major, maintained a 165 average on the season and topped the 200 mark on four occasions. She ranks second all-time at Elmhurst in total games over 200 with 12.
Holden, a sophomore nursing major, ranked third on the squad this season after averaging a 176. She bowled the team's highest game of the season, rolling a 257 in a win over Wisconsin-Whitewater on February 25, 2009. The 257 is the third-highest single-game score in Elmhurst history. Holden, who was named the NTCA's Division III Rookie of the Year in 2008, has bowled over 200 on nine occasions.
Paul, a sophomore early childhood education major, led the Bluejays with a 180 average this season. She bowled over a 200 on nine different occasions this season, including a season-high 222 in the Bluejays' win over Elizabeth City State University.
Grimes, a freshman environmental geoscciences major, ranked fourth on the team in her debut season, by averaging a 173. She bowled over a 200 six times during the season, including a season-high 223 in a loss to Vanderbilt.
Elmhurst finished the 2008-09 season with a 66-45 overall record. The Bluejays were ranked 15th in the final NTCA poll.
