Bluejay Bowlers Post 9-1 Record at Morgan State Invite
BALTIMORE, Md. - The Elmhurst College bowling team posted a strong showing at the Morgan State University Invitational. The Bluejays finished with a 9-1 mark, guaranteeing the squad a winning record for the first time in the program's three-year history.
The Bluejays finished sixth out of 12 teams in the Division II/III category based on total pinfall.
Elmhurst began the tournament by posting a perfect 5-0 mark on the first day of competition. The Bluejays kicked off the invitational with a 917-912 win over 14th-ranked Adelphi University. Sarah Paul (Naperville/Central) paced the Bluejays with a 192 while Alyssa Vogler (New Lenox/Lincoln-Way Central) finished just behind with a 191. Bethany Holden (Freeport/H.S.) added a 184 while Becky Wright (Des Plaines/Maine West) rolled a 182.
Elmhurst knocked off 19th-ranked St. Francis College 955-889 behind Sarah Bell's (Morris/H.S.) 228. Wright added a 225 in the win. The Bluejays toppled their third straight ranked opponent by defeating 10th-ranked Minnesota State University-Mankato 904-874. Paul led the Bluejays in the win by bowling a 211. Wright rolled a 195 in the victory.
The Bluejays made it four straight wins by defeating Winston-Salem State University 888-773 behind Paul's 193. Katie Gilman (River Grove/East Leyden) added a 190 in the win. The Bluejays closed out the first day of the tournament by defeating Hampton University 988-812. Vogler led the Bluejays by rolling a 222 while Bell and Paul each bowled a 203 game.
The Bluejays posted a 4-1 record on the tournament's second day when the format switched to the alternating-bowler total pinfall baker matches. The Bluejays started the day by defeating Kutztown University 710-614 and then knocked off fourth-ranked Sacred Heart University 741-684. Elmhurst continued its hot streak by beating South Carolina State University 721-671.
The Bluejays suffered their only defeat of the tournament at the hands of sixth-ranked Fairleigh Dickinson University 761-746. Elmhurst closed out the tournament by defeating North Carolina Central University 690-557.
Elmhurst bowls at 15th-ranked UW-Whitewater on Wednesday, February 20.
