KENOSHA, Wis. - The Elmhurst College women's basketball team fell to 11-2 overall and 1-1 in the CCIW following a last-second 56-55 loss at Carthage College. The Lady Reds improved to 6-7 overall and 1-1 in league play with the win. The back-and-forth contest featured seven ties and 21 lead changes.

Elmhurst led by as many as seven points in both the first and second half but was unable to put away Carthage. Elmhurst led 25-24 with under a minute to play in the first half but Jenny Wuest's lay-up with 12 seconds to play gave Carthage a 26-25 lead at halftime.

Elmhurst game out and grabbed the lead in the second half. Trailing by one at 34-33, the Bluejays scored eight straight points to take a 41-34 advantage. Carthage cut into the deficit and grabbed the lead at 48-36 on a Carlie Janowiak lay-up. A 3-pointer by Heather Furr (Plainfield-H.S.) put Elmhurst back up by one. The lead changed hands five time in the final five minutes. Trailing by one with 1:28 to play, Elmhurst's Candice Sutton (Matteson-Rich South) hit two free throws to put the Bluejays up one. Aja Terrier (Evanston-Township) knocked down a jumper with 52 seconds to play to give Elmhurst a three-point advantage. Erika Buchholz hit a lay-up with 36 seconds to play to bring Carthage to within a point at 55-54. Buchholz was fouled in the process but missed the free throw. Carthage grabbed the offensive rebound but turned the ball over. Carthage fouled Furr with 14 seconds to play, but she missed the free throw. Carthage grabbed the rebound and Shana Lieberman hit the game-winning jumper with two seconds to play.

For the game, the Bluejays shot 33.3 percent from the floor (22-of-66) and 30.9 percent from 3-point range (4-of-13).

Carthage finished the game shooting 42.4 percent from the floor (25-of-59) and 13.3 percent from 3-point range (2-of-15).

Terrier led Elmhurst with 15 points and 12 rebounds while Furr finished wtih 15 points and seven boards. Ashley Stein (Mundelein-H.S.) added 10 points in the loss.

Carthage was led by Wuest's 13 points. Kristina Dredge and Buchholz each finished with 12 points.

Elmhurst hosts Illinois Wesleyan University on Saturday, January 14, at 2:00 p.m.
