Bluejay Women Topple Augustana 78-74

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Elmhurst College women's basketball team closed out the regular season with a 78-74 win at Augustana College.

Elmhurst closed out the regular season with a 12-13 overall record and an 8-6 mark in the CCIW.  The Bluejays' season continues next weekend at the CCIW Tournament.

The Bluejays jumped out to a 49-38 lead at half time, but had to hold off a late surge from Augustana (5-20, 3-11 CCIW) to score the victory.  The Vikings closed to within two points at 67-65 with just over five minutes to play, but the Bluejays responded with an 8-0 run to build a 75-65 lead with three minutes left.

Augustana made one last run as eight straight points by the Vikings cut the Bluejays' lead down to just two (75-73) with just under a minute to play. The Vikings missed a pair of shots that would have tied the game before Elmhurst was able to seal the win from the foul line.

Despite shooting 51.7 percent (30-of-58) from the field, the Bluejays struggled with ball control, committing 26 turnovers that led to 29 Augustana points. The Bluejays shot 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from downtown and 61.9 percent (13-of-21) from the foul line.

Augustana shot 39.7 percent (25-of-63) from the field and 50.0 percent (7-of-14) from beyond the arc.  The Vikings converted 17-of-25 (68.0 percent) attempts from the foul line.

Lyndsie Long (Sugar Grove/Kaneland) led the way for Elmhurst by scoring 26 points on an 11-of-17 shooting performance. Kelsey Monroe (West Chicago/H.S.) added 16 points while shooting 5-of-10 from the field. Candice Sutton (Matteson/Rich South) added 10 points while Brittany Bobruk (Darien/Downers Grove South) added a game-high 10 rebounds in the win.

Augustana was led by Becky Rehn's 18 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Rehn was a perfect 4-of-4 from downtown. Katie Engwall added 15 points while Maegan Skahill chipped in with 11 points. Sarah Rachwalski finished with 10 points in the loss.

Elmhurst, seeded fourth for the upcoming CCIW Tournament, will face top-seed and tournament host Illinois Wesleyan University on Saturday, February 29.  Tip-off between the Titans and the Bluejays is schedueld for 6:00 p.m.
