Women's Hoops Team Drops Close Game to IWU

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College women's basketball team gave 19th ranked Illinois Wesleyan University all they could handle for 37 minutes, before the Titans pulled away for an 86-76 win.
The game featured 11 lead changes and six ties. Elmhurst (6-8, 3-2 CCIW) took a 74-73 lead with 3:35 to play on a pair of Lyndsie Long (Sugar Grove/Kaneland) free throws.
Illinois Wesleyan (13-2, 4-1 CCIW) came right back and reclaimed the lead on a Collen Caplice jumper. After a Bluejays turnover, Sarah Bull hit a lay-up to give the Titans a 77-74 lead with three minutes left. The Titans continued their run over the next two minutes, building an 81-74 lead with just under a minute to play.
Elmhurst cut the lead down to five on a Brittany Bobruk (Darien/Downers Grove South) lay-in, but the Titans sealed the game from the foul line by hitting 5-of-6 free throws in the final 30 seconds.
Elmhurst finished the game shooting 41.9 percent (26-of-62) from the floor and 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from beyond the arc. The Titans shot 46.9 percent (30-of-64) from the field and 36.8 percent (7-of-19) from long range. Both teams were impressive from the foul line with Elmhurst shooting 81.0 percent (17-of-21) and Illinois Wesleyan shooting 90.5 percent (19-of-21).
Long led all Elmhurst and all scorers with a career-high 28 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the floor. She finished 8-of-9 from the charity stripe and pulled down five rebounds in the win. Bobruk chipped in with 14 points and nine rebounds while Candice Sutton (Matteson/Rich South) added 12 points. Kelsey Monroe (West Chicago/H.S.) finished with six points in the loss.
Illinois Wesleyan was led by Bull's 24 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Crystal Dye and Colleen Caplice scored 14 apiece while Claire Sheehan totaled 13 points and nine assists. Mallory Heydorn finished with nine points and four assists.
Elmhurst travels to Millikin University on Saturday, January 26. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
