Bluejay Women Fall to Carthage 72-69

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Elmhurst College women's basketball team had its three-game winning streak snapped with a 72-69 loss at Carthage College.

After rallying from an 18-points second half deficit and earning a one-point win over North Central College on Saturday, Elmhurst (6-8 overall, 2-1 CCIW) almost pulled off another rally.  Trailing by 14 with 13:46 left, the Bluejays slowly began chipping away at the Lady Reds' lead.

A pair of Candice Sutton (Matteson/Rich South) free throws capped a 27-14 run and pulled Elmhurst to within a point (67-66) with four minutes to play. Carthage (11-3 overall, 3-0 CCIW) scored the next five points to take a 72-66 lead with 1:44 left. Lyndsie Long (Sugar Grove/Kaneland) connected on a 3-pointer with 1:31 to play to cut the score to 72-69.

Elmhurst had its chances in the closing 90 seconds. The Bluejays missed a pair of shots leading to a Carthage possession with 27 seconds remaining.  Carthage's Carlie Janowiak missed a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left, giving Elmhurst another chance. After Sutton missed a pair of free throws, the Bluejays' grabbed the offensive rebound and had one last chance, but Sarah Halbrader's (Loves Park/Rockford Boylan) 3-pointer came up short.

Kelsey Monroe (West Chicago/H.S.) led Elmhurst and all scorers with 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Long added 16 points before fouling out late in the game. Brittany Bobruk (Darien/Downers Grove South) finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Sutton and Christine Randick (Downers Grove/Immaculate Conception) each scored six points in the loss.

Four of Carthage's five starter finished in double figures in scoring. Janowiak led Carthage with 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Katherine Bursheim added 13 points while Katie Jarger totaled 11 points and eight boards. Erika Buchholz added 10 points for the Lady Reds.

Elmhurst finished the contest shooting 43.1 percent (22-of-51) from the field and 45.5 percent (5-of-11) from beyond the arc. The Bluejays struggled from the foul line, converting only 20-of-33 free throw attempts (60.6 percent). Carthage shot 49.1 percent (28-of-57) from the floor and 33.3 percent (6-of-18) from downtown. The Lady Reds had a poor night from the foul line, shooting only 37.0 percent (10-of-27) from the charity stripe.

Carthage won the battle on the glass, outrebounding Elmhurst 43-30. The Lady Reds converted 14 offensive rebounds into 12 second-chance points. Carthage outscored Elmhurst 12-1 on second chance opportunities.

Elmhurst's pressure defense led to 22 Carthage turnovers. The Bluejays scored 22 points off of the Lady Reds' turnovers.

Elmhurst hosts North Park University on Friday, January 18, at 7:30 p.m.
