Women's Hoops Team Stops Benedictine 78-69

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College women's basketball team closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 78-69 win over Benedictine University.
Elmhurst led 36-27 and built a 12-point lead before Benedictine mounted a rally to tie the score at 49-all with 10:55 to play. Elmhurst responded with a 15-6 run over the next six minutes to open up a 64-55 lead. Benedictine managed to trim the lead back down to four points with 2:27 left but came no closer as the Bluejays sealed the win from the foul line in the final minute.
Elmhurst shot 43.3 percent from the floor (29-of-67) and 36.8 percent (7-of-19) from beyond the arc. The Bluejays finished an impressive 86.7 percent (13-of-15) from the foul line. Benedictine outshot Elmhurst, finishing the game shooting 46.9 percent from the field (23-of-49) and 50.0 percent (7-of-14) from long distance.
Elmhurst won the turnover battle, forcing 21 turnovers on Benedictine while committing only 11. The Bluejays turned the 21 Eagles' turnovers into 21 points. The Bluejays also won the rebounding battle 38-31.
Brittany Bobruk (Darien/Downers Grove South) led the Bluejays with 20 points on 9-of-18 shooting. She added six rebounds in the win. Lyndsie Long (Sugar Grove/Kaneland) chipped in with 15 points (6-of-10) and six boards while Candice Sutton (Matteson/Rich South) totaled 12 points, four assists, and four steals. Kelsey Monroe (West Chicago/H.S.), Amber Hendricks (Farmer City/Blue Ridge), and Sarah Halbrader (Loves Park/Rockford Boylan) each finished with six points in the victory.
Benedictine was led by Tamika Curtis' 22 points and 13 rebounds. Curtis became Benedictine's all-time leading scorer in the process with 1,588 points. Laketa Simpson came off the bench to add 18 for the Eagles while Megan Walczak finished with 12 points.
Elmhurst begins CCIW play on Tuesday, January 8, by hosting Wheaton College at 5:30 p.m.
