Women's Hoops Team Falls to Anderson

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College women's basketball team was unable to sustain a 15-point first-half lead and a 9-point second half lead, eventually falling to Anderson University 71-67.

Elmhurst (1-5) built a 15-point lead (30-15) with 7:45 to play in the first half before Anderson (4-4) ripped off a 22-7 run to close out the half.  The score was knotted at 37-all at the half.

Sarah Halbrader's (Loves Park/Rockford Boylan) 3-pointer with 9:23 to play gave the Bluejays a 56-47 lead, but Anderson mounted another rally.

The Ravens responded with a 16-7 run to tie the score at 63-53 with just under four minutes to play.  After an Elmhurst free throw, Anderson ripped off six straight points to take a 5-point lead with 1:09 to play. A 3-pointer by Lyndsie Long (Sugar Grove/Kaneland) cut the deficit to two points with 49 seconds left.

A Mandy Seward free throw with 27 seconds left gave the Ravens a 3-point edge. Trailing by three and looking for the tying basket, Elmhurst's Candice Sutton (Matteson/Rich South) was whistled for a charge with 23 ticks left on the clock.

Elmhurst finished the game shooting only 30.7 percent (23-of-75) from the floor but only 23.1 percent (9-of-39) in the second half. Anderson shot 45.1 percent (23-of-51) from the field.  The Bluejays struggled from beyond the arc, hitting only 7-of-29 3-point attempts.

Long led all scorers with a game-high 24 points while pulling down a team-high 10 rebounds. Sutton chipped in with 15 points while Brittany Bobruk (Darien/Downers Grove South) finished with 11 points, six rebounds, and six steals. Christine Randick (Downers Grove/Immaculate Conception) came off the bench to score nine points.

Kayla Martin poured in 20 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds to pace the Ravens. Seward added 18 points in the win while Vail contributed 13.

Elmhurst hosts Wisconsin Lutheran College on Saturday, December 15, at 2:00 p.m.
