Women's Hoops Team Drops Opener to Lake Forest

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College women's basketball team dropped its 2007-08 season opener, falling to Lake Forest College 78-73 in the first round of the Lake Forest College Tournament.
Offensively, Elmhurst (0-1) played well, shooting 46.3 percent (25-of-54) from the floor. The Bluejay defense struggled to keep Lake Forest (1-0) off the board as the Foresters shot 49.2 percent (29-of-59) from the floor.
Elmhurst grabbed a six-point lead midway through the first half, but Lake Forest answered back to take the lead. Lake Forest led 31-30 with 2:30 to play and closed the half on a 10-4 run to grab a 41-34 lead at the break.
The Foresters built a nine-point advantage in the second half, but Elmhurst stormed back, on a 21-11 run to take a 55-54 lead with just under 10 minutes to play. Lake Forest responded with an 8-0 run to reclaim the lead at 62-55 with 7:46 remaining.
The Bluejays pulled to within two points on a Brittany Bobruk (Darien/Downers Grove South) jumper with just under two minutes, but came no closer as Lake Forest finished on a 5-2 run to score the 78-73 win.
The Bluejays' shooting percentage (.463) was higher than the team's shooting percentage in all but two contests from last season. Elmhurst shot 45.5 percent (5-of-11) from 3-point range while Lake Forest hit 38.5 percent (5-of-13) from long range.
The Bluejays struggled on the glass, as Lake Forest outrebounded Elmhurst 37-27, including a 17-11 advantage on the offensive glass. Lake Forest's 17 offensive rebounds led to 19 second chance points.
Bobruk led the way for Elmhurst, finishing with a game-high 18 points on 8-of-17 shooting. Lyndsie Long (Sugar Grove/Kaneland) added 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Candice Sutton (Matteson/Rich South) finished with 10 points and a team-high six rebounds. Kelsey Monroe (West Chicago/H.S.) had an impressive debut, scoring 10 points. Freshman Christine Randick (Downers Grove/Immaculate Conception) added eight points in the loss.
Lake Forest was led by Beth Lucas' 17 points on 7-of-16 shooting. Nicole Baich added 14 points and Sherrie Dubinski finished with nine points in the win.
Elmhurst will face Clarke College in the tournament's consolation game tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. Clarke dropped the tournament's opening game to Concordia University-Chicago 78-41.
