Bluejay Track Teams Run at Chicago Duals

CHICAGO, Ill. - The Elmhurst College men's and women's track and field teams kicked off the 2009 indoor season by posting identical 5-5 records at the University of Chicago Duals.

On the men's side, the Bluejays finished 5-5 with wins over CSU-L.A. (95-0), Chicago State (75-61), DePaul (85-29), Illinois Institute of Technology (87-19), and North Park (73-67). The Bluejays were handed dual meet losses by Beloit (73-64), M.S.O.E. (77-59), North Central (105-44), Illinois-Chicago (80-60), and Chicago (109-45).

Pat Austin recorded the highest individual finish for the Bluejays by placing second in the 5,000 meters in 15:24.46. Brian McConnell and Mike Ptack both had solid performances in the 800 meters. McConnell placed fourth in 1:59.42 while Ptack finished three places behind in seventh place (2:00.44). Neil Bonk added a seventh-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.63 seconds.  Ryan Wasilewski scored a ninth-place finish in the weight throw (12.63 meters), and added an 11th-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 12.54 meters. The Bluejays' distance medley relay team of Ptack, McConnell, Mark D'Angelo, and Nathan Selling finished in second place with a time of 10:42.80.

On the women's side, Elmhurst finished 5-5 overall with dual victories over Chicago State (69-27), DePaul (69-40), Illinois Institute of Technology (78-15), M.S.O.E. (68-52), and North Park (71-58). The Bluejays' dual losses came at the hands of Beloit (74-63), CSU-L.A. (89-47), North Central (100-45), Illinois-Chicago (68-62), and Chicago (117-34).

Katlyn Bednarski turned in the best individual performance for the Bluejays, placing fourth in the 5,000 meters in 18:54.46. The Bluejays also had a strong showing in the 3,000 meters with three runners scoring top-10 finishes. Amanda Anderson placed fifth in 11:20.75, while Megan Johnson added a sixth-place finish in 11:26.96. Shauna Potrawski crossed the finish line in ninth place in 11:34.81. Tracy Brtis had a busy day for the Bluejays, recording four top-15 finishes. Brtis placed 10th in both the 55-meter hurdles (9.70 seconds) and the 400 meter dash (1:08.58). She also placed 14th in the 55-meter dash (7.99 seconds), and 15th in the 200 meters (29.07 seconds). Mary Connelly scored an 11th-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles (9.97 seconds), and placed 12th in the triple jump (9.13 meters). Margie Leahu added a 12th-place finish in the shot put (9.52 meters) and a 15th-place finish in the weight throw (9.90 meters).
