Track Teams Compete at CCIW Championships

DECATUR, Ill. - The Elmhurst College track and field teams competed at the CCIW Championships at Millikin University. The men's team finished in sixth place with 65 points while the women's team placed seventh with 41 points.

North Central College won the men's title with 232 points while Wheaton College captured the women's crown with 179 points.

On the women's side, the Bluejays were led by a pair of second place finishes from Marisa Mele (Naperville-Neuqua Valley). Mele placed second in the 5,000 meters in 18:23.64 and finished sexond in the 10,000 meters with a time of 37:57.56. Molli Hermiston (Eldridge, Iow-North Scott) placed third in the heptathlon with 4,233 points, a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Championships. Hermiston also placed fourth in the javelin with a throw of 122-11. Heather Furr (Plainfield-H.S.) finished sixth in the javelin with a mark of 116-6 and scored a fifth place finish in the heptathlon with 3,830 points. Stacey Turilli (Bloomington-Normal) finished eighth in the steeplechase (12:30.39) to earn all-conference honors.

On the men's side, Quintin Bailey (Carol Stream-Glenbard North) won the 200 meters dash in 21.62 seconds, a provisional qualifying time. He also placed second in the 100 meters in 10.87 seconds. Brian McConnell (Delavan-H.S.) scored a provisional qualifying time of 3:54.76 seconds in the 1,500 meters. McConnell finished just .01 seconds behind North Central's Andy Hubner to place second. Mike Ptack (Oak Park/Oak Park-River Forest) placed third in the steeplechase in 9:29.02 and placed seventh in the 5,000 meters in 15:20.03. The Bluejays 4x100 relay team of Bailey, Cedrick Jones (Grand Prairie, Texas-Sam Houston), Terence Young (Chicago-DeLaSalle) and Reggie Allen (Evanston-Township) provisionally qualified for nationals with a second-place finish in 41.83 seconds. Allen, Young, Bailey and Troy Lymon (Maywood-Walther Lutheran) placed third in the 4x400 relay.

Bat Bacon (Orlando, Fla.-Olympia) finished third in the long jump (22-02.25) while Jared Hagar (Bolingbrook-H.S.) finished fourth in the javelin (156-8). Brian O'Neil (Chicago-Fenwick) scored 5,592 points in the decathlon to place third.
