Bluejay Wrestlers Take Second at CCIW Championships
WHEATON, Ill. - The Elmhurst College wrestling team, ranked 13th in the latest NWCA poll, placed second at the 2009 CCIW Championships. Three Bluejays brought home individual championships.
Elmhurst finished with 85 points. North Central College won the team title with 98.5 points. All 10 CCIW Champions from either Elmhurst or North Central. Three Bluejays won individual titles while seven North Central wrestlers captured CCIW crowns.
The Cardinals had a slim 4.5-point lead heading into the finals. After two straight wins by the Bluejays gave them the lead, the Cardinals won four straight matches against the Bluejays to pull away and earn the team title.
Jake Oster scored his second straight CCIW Championship at 125 pounds by pinning Augustana's Kyle Broadwater in 4:59 in the championship match. He earned a bye in the semifinal rounds. Oster was named the CCIW's Most Outstanding Wrestler
Jake Denhof followed Oster's win by pinning Augustana's Andrew Randone in 6:22 to capture the individual title at 133 pounds. In his semifinal match, Denhof pinned Wheaton's Caleb Cardenas in 1:19.
Mark Corsello earned his second consecutive CCIW title at 285 pounds by defeating North Central's Billy Malone 7-2 in the finals. Corsello earned a first-round bye directly into the championship match.
Rob Lejman took second place at 141 pounds after falling 5-2 to North Central's Jamie Devine in the finals. Lejman advanced to the finals by defeating Wheaton's Jeff Coners 11-4 in the semifinals.
Charlie Curran added a second-place finish at 149 pounds after he dropped a 3-2 decision in the finals to North Central's Jason Fitzenreider. Curran won his semifinal match by scoring a 12-2 major decision over Augustana's Zac Holland.
Nick Parrish finished second at 157 pounds. Parris dropped a closed 6-4 contest to North Central's Cowan Brown in the finals. He earned a 21-7 major decision over Augustana's Matt McIntyre in the semifinals.
Greg Horn placed second at 165 pounds after falling to North Central's Ben Youel 8-3 in the championship match. Horn advanced to the finals by scoring a 15-0 technical fall over Wheaton's Justin Marble.
Frank Savegnago scored a third-place finish at 174 pounds. Savegnago suffered a 5-3 overtime loss to Wheaton's Justin Tomal in the semifinals, but rebounded to defeat Augustana's Gabe Gardner 5-4 in the consolation final.
Bernie Vazquez earned a third-place finish at 197 pounds. Vazquez dropped a 6-2 match to Augustana's Matt Nykaza in the semifinals. Vazquez earned a bye in the consolation round to place third.
Garrett Washington scored a fourth-place finish at 184 pounds. Washington dropped his semifinal match to Wheaton's Toby Boltz and then fell 5-1 to Augustana's Brian Kerr in the consolation finals.
