Four Bluejay Wrestlers Qualify for Nationals

COLLEGVILLE, Minn. - The Elmhurst College men's wrestling team placed second at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. Four Bluejays qualified to compete at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships.

Elmhurst, ranked 15th in the latest NWCA Poll, placed second at the regional with 116.5 points. Augsburg College won the regional with 129.5 points.

Three Bluejays earned their trip to NCAA by winning regional titles. Jake Oster (Homer Glen/Lockport), ranked fourth in the latest NWCA poll, posted a perfect 3-0 record to win his first regional title at 125 pounds. Oster toppled sixth-ranked Seth Flodeen of Augsburg 15-12 in the finals.

Kyle Katz (Des Plaines/Maine West), ranked fourth in the latest NWCA poll, captured the title at 157 pounds by posting a perfect 3-0 record. Katz defeated Augsburg's Beau Hansen 8-4 in the championship finals.

Mark Corsello (Park Ridge/Maine South), ranked 10th in the NWCA poll, posted a 4-0 record to earn the title at 285 pounds. Corsello earned a thrilling double overtime tiebreaker against fourth-ranked Jaren Rutledge of Knox College in the finals.

Jeff Kastel (Clarendon Hills/Hinsdale Central) placed second at 149 pounds to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Kastel, ranked fifth in the latest NWCA poll, finished the tournament with a 3-1 record. Kastel scored three impressive wins en route to the final, before falling to second-ranked Wily Holst of Augsburg College.

Three Bluejays earned fifth-place finishes. Ben Salabura (Chicago/Marist) posted a 3-2 record at 133 pounds to place fifth. He scored a 9-4 win over Wheaton's Cody Nord in the fifth-place match.  Tony Doan (Port Huron, Mich./H.S.) placed fifth at 165 pounds with a 3-2 record. Doan advanced to the semifinals before falling. He earned a forfeit win over Chicago's Troy Carlson in the fifth-place match. Greg Horn (Wheaton/North) placed fifth at 174 pounds after posting a 4-2 record. Horn defeated Chicago's David Kneisel 7-3 in the fifth-place match.

Garrett Washington (Oswego/H.S.) placed sixth at 184 pounds after posting a 2-3 record. Washington fell to Concordia-Moorhead's Cody Salo in the fifth-place match.

The NCAA Championships will be held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on March 7-8.
