Bluejay Wrestlers Place Third at Al Hanke

ELMHURST, Ill. - Four members of the Elmhurst College wrestling team earned individual titles as the Bluejays placed third at the 26th Al Hanke Invitational.  The Bluejays finished just a point out of second place with 109.5 points. Concordia College (Minn.) edged Elmhurst with 110.5 points. Olivet College, ranked 17th in the latest NWCA poll, won the team title with 121 points.

Jake Oster (Homer Glen/Lockport) returned to the mat for the first time since an injury in November put him on the shelf. Oster did not miss a beat, winning the individual title at 125 pounds with a perfect 3-0 record. Oster scored a pair of wins by pin fall and then defeated George Gogonas of Augustana 14-0 in the finals.

Ben Salabura (Chicago/Marist) posted a perfect 3-0 mark at 133 pounds while winning the individual crown. Salabura defeated the University of Chicago's Ben Hart 5-1 in the finals to earned the title.

Jeff Kastel (Clarendon Hills/Hinsdale Central) rolled to another title at 149 pounds by posting a perfect 4-0 record. Kastel won all four of his matches by major decisions, including a 14-4 major over Concordia's Justin Berns in the final.

Mark Corsello (Park Ridge/Maine South) posted a perfect 4-0 record while winning the title at 285 pounds. Corsello defeated Harper College's Alex Delonis 9-4 in the finals.

Tony Doan (Port Huron, Mich./H.S.) added a second-place finish at 165 pounds. Doan fell to Maranatha Baptist Bible's Ben Hoover in the finals. Hoover earned the tournament's "Most Outstanding Wrestler Award."

Bob Hohn (Mokena/Marist) added a fifth-place finish at 197 pounds by pinning Lakeland's Everett Wood in 1:56.

Several Bluejays had strong days while wrestling as individuals. Garrett Washington (Oswego/H.S.) placed second at 184 pounds after dropping an 11-10 decision to MSOE's Matt Olsen in the finals.

Bernie Vasquez (Waukegan/Carmel) added a third-place finish at 197 pounds with a 4-3 win over Olivet's Tucker Surbrook. Demetri Vrettos (Cicero/Morton East) placed fourth at 285 pounds after falling to Olivet's Sean Misko. Sheldon Hubbard (Sterling/H.S.) added a fifth-place win at 157 pounds by defeating teammate Nick Parrish (Elmhurst/York) 4-1.  Jacob Santiago (Chicago/Von Steuben) placed sixth at 125 pounds.

Elmhurst will wrestle North Central College in a CCIW dual on Wednesday, January 23, at 7:00 p.m.
