Bluejay Grapplers Take Second at NCC Invite
NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The Elmhurst College wrestling team, ranked 26th in the latest NWCA Division III poll, placed second at the North Central College Invitational with 113 points.
North Central, the tournament's host, won the team title with 126.5 points.
Eight Bluejays placed among the top six in their respective weight classes. A pair of Elmhurst wrestlers earned individual titles. Jeff Kastel (Clarendon Hills/Hinsdale Central) posted a 4-0 record while winning the individual title at 149 pounds. Kastel defeated Concordia's Joe Massman 9-5 in the finals to earn the crown.
Kyle Katz (Des Plaines/Maine West) earned the individual title at 157 pounds by defeating seventh-ranked Jesse Milks of UW-Platteville 3-1 in the tournament finals. Katz also posted a 4-0 record to win the crown.
Three Bluejays earned second-place finishes. Ben Salabura (Chicago/Marist) placed second at 133 pounds after posting a 3-1 record. Salabura advanced to the finals before falling to the nation's top-ranked wrestler, Adam Johnson of North Central.
Charlie Curran (Arlington Heights/Hersey) scored a second-place finish at 141 pounds after finishing with a 3-1 mark. Curran advanced to the finals before falling to UW-Platteville's Vince Alber 10-4.
Mark Corsello (Park Ridge/Maine South) earned a second-place finish at 285 pounds. Corsello finished 3-1 and advanced to the finals before falling to fourth-ranked Jaran Rutledge of Knox College.
Tony Doan (Port Huron, Mich./H.S.) placed fifth at 165 pounds and Frank Savegnago (St. Charles/East) placed second at 174 pounds.
Bob Hohn (Mokena/Marist) added a sixth-place finish at 197 pounds.
Tyler Winland (Bloomington/Normal Community) added a fifth-place finish at 125 pounds while wrestling as an individual. Rob Lejman (Hoffman Estates/Conant) placed fourth at at 141 pounds while competing as an individual.
Elmhurst will host the Al Hanke Invitational next Saturday (January 19).
