Mark Scherer
Head Coach
Mark Scherer is entering his 13th year as the head men's basketball coach at Elmhurst. He has coached some of the most successful seasons in school history, including a school-best 22-5 record and first-ever CCIW title during the 2001 season. That team advanced to the NCAA Division III Sweet Sixteen and was ranked No. 9 in the nation in the final poll.
Last season, Scherer guided the Bluejays to their third straight CCIW Tournament appearance and finished with an 18-8 overall record with an 8-6 mark in conference play. Ryan Burks earned second-team all-conference honors, while Brett Ruch earned first-team all-conference honors and was named a first-team all-Midwest-region and fourth-team all-American player.
In 2001, Scherer was named both the NCAA Division III Midwest Region Coach of the Year and the Division III Coach of the Year by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association.
Scherer's teams have produced winning records in nine of his 12 seasons and have compiled a 193-113 overall record (.631 winning percentage).
Scherer came to Elmhurst with six years of experience as an assistant coach at the NCAA Division I level. During his four years at Valparaiso University (1992-1996), the Crusaders went 73-43 and posted three consecutive 20-win seasons (20-8, 20-8 and 21-11). Coach Scherer also assisted at Western Illinois University for two seasons.
Scherer earned a bachelor of arts degree in physical education at Eureka College, where he led the Red Devils to three consecutive playoff appearances as a two-time all-conference honoree (Player of the Year as a senior). He received his master of science degree in sports management from Western Illinois.
He played professionally in Ireland from 1983-86, including one season as player-coach when his 31-10 team placed third in the Irish Basketball Association's National League and finished second in the European Cup.
Scherer resides in Elmhurst with his wife, Tami, and their two children, Cooper and Saige.
