Men's Basketball Team Moves to 5-0

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Elmhurst College men's basketball team, ranked 17th in the latest D3hoops.com poll, improved to 5-0 on the season by defeating the College of Mount St. Joseph 73-64.
The first half was a back-and-forth contest that featured five lead changes and five ties. Mount St. Joseph built a 29-21 lead with 7:20 to play in the half, but a 14-4 run by Elmhurst gave the Bluejays 35-33 lead with just over two minutes to play in the half. Mount St. Joseph reclaimed the lead, but a pair of free throws by Ryan Burks have Elmhurst a 37-36 lead at the half.
Elmhurst slowly pulled away in the second half, building an 11-point (56-45) lead with 11:29 to play. Mount St. Joseph managed to cut the Bluejays' lead down to six points with 3:30 to go, but the Bluejays pushed their lead up the 13 points with 20 seconds to play and held on for the 73-64 win.
Elmhurst shot 64.3 percent (27-of-42) from the floor, including 50.0 percent (7-of-14) from beyond the arc. Mount St. Joseph shot 50.0 percent (23-of-46) from the field, including 33.3 percent (3-of-9) from downtown.
Brent Ruch paced the Bluejays in the win by recording a double-double. Ruch scored 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting, and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds. Burks added 16 points while Robert Strzemp finished with 13. Chris Childs came off the bench to score 10 points.
Michael Romes led Mount St. Joseph with a game-high 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting.
Elmhurst hosts the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse on Wednesday, December 3.
