Men's Hoops Team Falls at Wheaton 78-69

WHEATON, Ill. - The Elmhurst College men's basketball team closed out the regular season with a 78-69 loss at Wheaton College.
Elmhurst (18-7, 8-6 CCIW) led only in the opening minutes as Wheaton quickly grabbed the lead. The Thunder led 44-28 at the break.
The Bluejays pulled to within six points in the game's final minute, but could not get any closer as they fell by nine to the Thunder. The loss gave Elmhurst the fourth seed in the upcoming CCIW Tournament.
Elmhurst shot 54 percent (25-of-46) from the floor and 32 percent (6-of-19) from downtown. Elmhurst hit 13-of-15 attempts (87 percent) from the foul line.
Wheaton shot 53 percent (25-of-46) from the field and 50 percent (7-of-14) from beyond the arc. The Thunder hit 21-of-25 free throw attempts (84 percent).
Ryan Burks (Manito/Midwest Central) led the Bluejays with 21 points on 6-of-13 shooting. He added five assists in the loss. Brent Ruch (Farmer City/Blue Ridge) added 20 points while shooting 8-of-11 from the field. Chris Childs (Barrington/H.S.) finished with 12 points while Jared Hintzsche (Kirkland/Hiawatha) added 10 points in the loss.
The Bluejays had no answer for Wheaton's Kent Raymond who scored a game-high 37 points while hitting 12-of-22 shots. Raymond hit 5-of-9 attempts from downtown. Ben Panner added 14 points and Jacob Carwell scored 12 points for Wheaton.
Elmhurst earned the fourth-seed to the CCIW tournament with the loss. The Bluejays will face top-seed and tournament host Augustana College on Friday, February 29.
