Bluejay Men Fall at Augustana 74-72

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -The Elmhurst College men's basketball team, ranked 10th in the latest D3hoops.com poll, fell to 1-1 in CCIW play following a 74-72 road loss at fifth-ranked Augustana College.
Elmhurst (11-2 overall, 1-1 CCIW) trailed 31-24 after leading scorers Ryan Burks (Manito/Midwest Central) and Brent Ruch (Farmer City/Blue Ridge) both picked up two early fouls and saw only limited firs half minutes.
A 29-19 second-half run by Augustana (10-3 overall, 1-1 CCIW) gave the Vikings a 17-point lead with 8:57 left to play. Elmhurst slowly began chipping away, pulling to within four points (71-67) with 43 seconds left. After two Augustana free throws a put back by Jared Hintzsche (Hiawatha/Kirkland) trimmed the lead back down to four with 14 seconds left. After a Viking free throw Burks hit a 3-pointer with seconds left to pull to within two with five ticks left. Augustana missed two free throws with one second left, leaving the Bluejays only a full court heave that fell short.
Elmhurst shot 50.0 percent from the floor (26-of-52) and from downtown (4-of-8). The Bluejays also shot 84.2 percent (16-of-19) from the foul line. Augustana shot 47.3 percent (26-of-55) from the floor and 47.4 percent (9-of-19) from beyond the arc.
Ruch led Elmhurst with 19 points and 10 rebounds while Burks added 14 points. Jimmy Sarris (Crystal Lake/Crystal Lake South), Matt Ryder (Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley) and Hintzsche all finished with eight points.
Brett Wessels led Augustana with 20 points while Alex Washington chipped in with 17. Matt Pelton added 14 in the win for Augustana.
Elmhurst plays host to Carthage College on Wednesday, January 16.
