Men's Hoops Team Falls to UW-Oshkosh 88-86

OSHKOSH, Wis. - In a game that featured 21 lead changes and 12 ties, the Elmhurst College men's basketball team suffered its first loss of the 2007-08 season, falling to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh 88-86.
D.J. Marsh hit a baseline jumper with 0.5 seconds to play to break an 86-all tie and give UW-Oshkosh (4-0) the win.
Trailing by two with 1:38 to play, Ryan Burks (Manito/Midwest Central) was fouled shooting a 3-pointer. Burks hit all three free throws to put Elmhurst up 82-81. The Titans Greg Schrimpf was fouled shooting a trey with 1:05 to play. Schrimpf hit two free throws to put the Titans back up by one.
Elmhurst (3-1) reclaimed the lead with 57 seconds to play on a Robert Strzemp (Oak Park/Oak-Park River Forest) jumper. The Elmhurst lead was short lived as Matt Miller knocked down a 3-pointer with 31 seconds to play to put the Titans up by two.
The Bluejays' Brent Ruch (Farmer City/Blue Ridge) knotted the score at 86-all with a baseline jumper with 13 seconds remaining.
After the Titans lost the ball out of bounds, they found Marsh open up the baseline, who knocked down the 10-footer with less than a second to play.
Elmhurst, ranked 13th in the latest D3hoops.com poll, trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half, before grabbing the lead in the closing minutes. A Matt Miller 3-pointer at the buzzer gave UW-Oshkosh (4-0) a 43-42 lead at halftime.
Free throws played a huge factor in the game as Elmhurst was whistled for 21 fouls sending UW-Oshkosh to the line 36 times. The Titans converted 32 of the 36 attempts (88.9 percent). Elmhurst went to the foul line only 12 times, hitting all 12 attempts.
The Bluejays outshot the Titans 61.8 percent (34-of-55) to 50.0 percent (24-of-48) in the game.
Ruch led all scorers with 29 points on 14-of-17 shooting. He also pulled down seven boards in the win. Dustin Bainter (Macomb/H.S.) came off the bench to score 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting while Burks also scored 11. Strzemp totaled 10 points and Matt Ryder (Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley) added nine points, all on second-half 3-pointers.
Marsh led the Titans with 28 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Schrimpf poured in 27 points on 6-of-8 shooting, while also hitting 12-of-13 from the charity stripe. Jordan Johnson added 12 points and Dan Seckar-Anderson finished with 10.
Elmhurst will host Alma College on Saturday, December 1, at 7:30 p.m.
