Mark Scherer
Head Coach

Mark Scherer is entering his 12th year as men's basketball head coach at Elmhurst. He has coached four of the most successful seasons in school history. The 2001 squad compiled a school-best 22-5 record and won the CCIW championship for the first time ever. The team advanced to the NCAA Division III Sweet Sixteen and was ranked No. 9 in the nation in the final poll.

Last season, the Bluejays earned their third straight runner-up finish in the CCIW, compiling a 21-6 overall record. The Bluejays finished the season ranked among the top 15 schools in the nation and was the runner up at the CCIW Tournament.

In 2001, Scherer was named both the NCAA Division III Midwest Region Coach of the Year and the Division III Coach of the Year by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association.

Scherer's teams have produced winning records in eight of his 11 seasons and have compiled a 175-105 record overall (.625 winning percentage).

Scherer came to Elmhurst with six years of experience as an assistant coach at the NCAA Division I level. During his four years at Valparaiso University (1992-1996), the Crusaders went 73-43 and posted three consecutive 20-win seasons (20-8, 20-8 and 21-11). Coach Scherer also assisted at Western Illinois University for two seasons.

Scherer earned a bachelor of arts degree in physical education at Eureka College, where he led the Red Devils to three consecutive playoff appearances as a two-time all-conference honoree (Player of the Year as a senior). He received his master of science degree in sports management from Western Illinois.

He played professionally in Ireland from 1983-86, including one season as player-coach when his 31-10 team placed third in the Irish Basketball Association's National League and finished second in the European Cup.

Scherer resides in Elmhurst with his wife, Tami, and their two children, Cooper and Saige.

John Baines
Assistant Coach

John Baines, a member of the 1997 NCAA Division III national championship team at Illinois Wesleyan University, is entering his eighth season as an assistant coach for the Bluejays.

Baines, who has previously coach the women's golf and men's tennis teams at Elmhurst, came to the Bluejays' coaching staff from Bloomington High School.

Baines earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Illinois Wesleyan, where he was a two-year starter for the men's basketball team. During his time there, the team compiled a 103-14 record, won an NCAA Division III national championship, participated in two Final Fours, made four Sweet Sixteen appearances and won three CCIW titles.

Baines earned his master's degree in sports administration from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2003.

A native of Bloomington, Baines resides in Chicago.

Dan Doyle
Assistant Coach

Dan Doyle is entering his second year with the Bluejays as an assistant coach.

Doyle played basketball at North Central College from 2002-2005. He served as a student assistant coach for North Central during the 2006 season when the Cardinals captured the CCIW Tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

Doyle earned a bachelor's degree in history and a minor in coaching from North Central in 2006.

He currently resides in Wheaton.

 
 

Troy Forbes
Assistant Coach

After spending last season as an assistant coach at Lake Superior State University in Michigan, Troy Forbes returns for his fifth season with the Bluejay coaching staff.

Forbes previously served as a graduate assistant coach at Northwest Missouri State University from 2000-2002. During has time at Northwest Missouri, the team posted a 29-3 mark record and advanced the elite eight of the NCAA Division II tournament during the 2001 season.

Coach Forbes earned a master's degree from Northwest Missouri State University (2002) and a bachelor’s degree from Emporia State University (2000) where he was a two-year starter and scored over 800 career points. He ranks third at Emporia State in career three-point field goals made with 153.

A native of Emporia, Kansas, Coach Forbes now resides in Elmhurst.
