Bluejays Lose 14-13 Slugfest at Ozarks

CLARKSVILLE, Ark. - The Elmhurst College baseball team dropped a 14-13 slugfest at the University of the Ozarks to slip to 2-4 on the season. Ozarks improved to 14-8 with the win.
The Bluejays trailed 13-10 after six innings, but scored a run on a Jim Deschamps (Glenview/Glenbrook South) RBI single in the seventh inning to pull to within two. Elmhurst evened the score in the eighth when Brian Mucha (Arlington Heights/Buffalo Grove) smacked a two-out, two-run homer.
A one-out single by Cory Briggs gave the Eagles a base runner in the bottom of the ninth. After a sacrifice bunt, John Glenn delivered a two-out game winning single to give Ozarks the walk-off win.
After the Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, the Bluejays answered back with a six spot in the second inning. Tom Rhein (Worth/Brother Rice) and Deschamps both smashed three-run homers to give Elmhurst a 6-3 lead.
The Eagles answered right back with six runs in the bottom of the second. Glenn hit a two-run double while Todd Koch and Bruce Cameron each homered for Ozarks.
Elmhurst evened the score at nine in the third inning as Rhein bashed his second three-run homer in back-to-back innings.
The Bluejays took a 10-9 lead in the fourth inning on a Pat Meginniss (Elgin/H.S.) RBI single, but the Eagles scored four times in the bottom of the inning to take a 13-10 lead.
Rhein finished 2-for-5 with a pair of three-run homers and six runs driven in. Deschamps finished 3-for-5 with four runs driven in and two runs scored. Meginniss turned in a 3-for-5 performance with a run scored and an RBI. Nick Sharkey (Bolingbrook/H.S.) added a pair of hits in three at bats while scoring a team-high three runs.
Steve Huisel (Gurnee/Warren) made the start and lasted 1.2 innings, getting tagged for eight hits and nine runs. Andrew Auriemme (Addison/Addison Trail) pitched 2.1 innings of relief, allowing five hits and four runs. He walked two while striking out two. Scott Jones (Island Lake/Wauconda) suffered the loss in relief, despite holding Ozarks to only four hits and one run in 4.2 innings of work. He walked one and fanned two.
The Bluejays play a doubleheader at Maryville University on Thursday, March 22.
