Elmhurst Baseball Team Splits Season Openers

DANVILLE, Ky. - The Elmhurst College baseball team split its season opening doubleheader against the DePauw University. The Bluejays took game one 9-8 and fell 8-9 in the night cap.

ELMHURST 9, DePAUW 8 - Elmhurst used a seven-run fourth inning to break the game open and the Bluejays held on for the 9-8 win.

Mike Goltz (Neenah, Wis./H.S.) recorded a pair of hits, scored two runs and also drove in a pair of runs in the win for the Bluejays. Matt Brauer (Streamwood/H.S.) also drove in a pair in the win. Brian Mucha (Arlington Heights/Buffalo Grove) collected two hits while driving in a run for the Bluejays.

Kyle Bjerga (Lombard/Glenbard East) worked a scheduled three innings to collect the win. He scattered three earned runs and four hits while striking out five. Steve Huisel (Gurnee/Warren) worked the final two innings of relief to earn the save.

DePAUW 9, ELMHURST 8 - Elmhurst pitchers allowed 14 walks and the defense committed six errors en route to losing 9-8 in 10 innings.

Tom Rhein (Worth/Brother Rice) smacked a bases clearing triple to drive in three runs in the eighth inning and even the score at 7-7.  Elmhurst grabbed the lead in the next inning when Steve Hagstrom (Des Plaines/Maine West) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Elmhurst retired the first two batters in the ninth before consecutive walks and a bloop single sent the game into extra innings.  The Bluejays went three-up and three-down in the top of the 10th inning. DePauw took advantage of three one out walks by Elmhurst pitchers that loaded the bases. 

Eric Farrell (Elk Grove Village/Elk Grove) took the loss for Elmhurst. He allowed two runs and walked four in 1.1 innings of relief.
