Elmhurst Baseball Team Wins Openers

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Elmhurst College baseball team opened the 2009 season by sweeping a doubleheader from Concordia University (Wis.). The Bluejays blanked Concordia 12-0 in the first game behind a no-hitter from Cody Boals. Elmhurst finished the sweep with a 19-5 win in game two.
ELMHURST 12, CONCORDIA 0 (Game One) - Boals tossed just the third no-hitter in Elmhurst history to lead the Bluejays to a 12-0 season-opening win. Boals worked seven innings, allowing just three walks while striking out 12. It was the first no-hitter for the Bluejays since the 1999 season. Offensively, Ryan Schrader homered in his collegiate debut and finished the game 3-of-4 from the plate with three runs scored and a pair of runs driven in. Zach Hofer and Vince Mathe drove in two runs apiece in the victory.
ELMHURST 19, CONCORDIA 5 (Game Two) - The Bluejays battered the Concordia pitching staff for 19 runs and 18 hits while cruising to the doubleheader sweep. The Bluejays blew open a 4-1 contest in the bottom of the fourth inning when the team sent 18 batters to the plate and scored 13 runs.
Nick Herrera led the Bluejays' attack, finishing a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate. Herrera smacked a pair of doubles, scored three runs and drove in a team-leading five runs. Michael Kerr added three hits and drove in four runs while Steve Hagstrom finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a team-leading four runs scored.
Cyrus Rogers earned the win in relief for the Bluejays.
