Bluejay Baseball Team Drops Two to Wheaton

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College baseball team fell to 4-14 in CCIW play after dropping both ends of a doubleheader to Wheaton College. Elmhurst dropped game one 19-15 and fell in game two 15-9.  Elmhurst slipped to 10-23 overall while Wheaton improved to 20-11 overall and 9-8 in league play.

WHEATON 19, ELMHURST  15 - Elmhurst dropped its second straight slugfest to Wheaton, falling by a final score of 19-15.

Elmhurst jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but Wheaton scored twice in the second and broke the game open with an eight-run third inning. Elmhurst trailed 19-12 heading into the bottom of the seventh. The Bluejays scored three runs and loaded the bases to bring the tying run to the plate, but Wheaton was able to end the Bluejays' rally.

Wheaton outhit Elmhurst 19-15 in the game.

Vince Mathe (Park Ridge/Maine South) led the Bluejays' offense in the loss with a 3-for-5 day at the plate. Mathe roped a pair of doubles and drove in five. Tom Rhein (Worth/Brother Rice) finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two driven in. He smacked a two-run homer in the loss.  Brett Lilley (Rochester Hills, Mich./H.S.) finished 2-for-4 with three runs driven in. Michael Kerr (Glenview/Glenbrook South) finished 2-for-4 with three runs driven in. He also scored four times in the loss.

Kyle Silbert (Wheaton/North) took the loss from the mound. Silbert was tagged for 14 hits and 12 earned runs in five innings of work. He walked three and struck out six.

 WHEATON 15, ELMHURST 9 - Wheaton completed the three game series sweep by scoring a 15-9 win over Elmhurst in the series finale.

The Thunder banged out 18 hits while Elmhurst finished with 11. 

Wheaton jumped out to a 5-0 lead with three runs in the first and two runs in the second. Elmhurst evened the score at 5-5 with a five-run third inning.  After opening up an 11-7 lead, the Thunder put the game away with four runs in the top of the ninth.

Rhein continued to swing a hot bat, finishing 3-for-4 at the plate. He blasted a solo homer in the fifth. Dan Matkovic (Carol Stream/Glenbard North) hit a two-run homer, the first of his career in the ninth inning.

Matt Seroka (Chicago/Brother Rice) suffered the loss for Elmhurst. Seroka allowed eight hits and seven runs in four innings of work. He walked five and fanned two.
