Baseball Team Rallies, But Falls in Extra Innings

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College baseball team erased a six-run ninth inning deficit, but fell to Augustana College 9-6 in ten innings.

Elmhurst slipped to 8-12 overall (3-6 CCIW) while Augustana improved to 19-4 (6-2 CCIW).

Augustana led 6-0 heading into the ninth inning, but the Bluejays mounted a six-run rally in the ninth inning to force extra innings.  After a Brett Lilley (Rochester Hills, Mich./H.S.) RBI single, Pat Meginniss (Elgin/H.S.) drew a walk to load the bases. Tyler Manske (Rockton/Hononegah) singled to make the score 6-2. After a double play left runners on second and third, Vince Mathe (Park Ridge/Maine South) singled home a run. Tom Rhein (Worth/Brother Rice) followed with a run scoring single to cut the deficit to two. Scott Perkinson (Elk Grove Village/Elk Grove) drew a walk to load the bases. Mike Goltz (Neenah, Wis./H.S.) hit a low liner to short that went between the shortstop's legs and into left field to allow the tying runs to score. Jim Deschamps (Glenview/Glenbrook South) drew a walk to load the bases, but the Bluejays were unable to score the winning run.

Augustana scored three times in the top of the 10th inning to take a 9-6 lead. Elmhurst brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the inning, but the Bluejays' were unable to mount a rally.

Augustana outhit Elmhurst 20-9 in the win. The Vikings recorded five extra-base hits, including two home runs, while all nine of Elmhurst's hits were singles.

Deschamps, Mathe and Rhein each finished with two hits in the loss to lead the Elmhurst offense.

Scott Jones (Island Lake/Wauconda) took the loss in relief. He allowed five hits and three runs in one inning of work.

The Bluejays host Carthage College for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 12, at 1:00 p.m.
