Baseball Team Takes Two From North Park

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College baseball team improved to 3-4 in CCIW play by sweeping both ends of a doubleheader from North Park University.

Elmhurst took game one 9-2 and won the night cap 11-10 with a thrilling two-out rally in the bottom of the ninth inning. Elmhurst moved to 8-10 overall and 3-4 in the CCIW while North Park slipped to 10-12 overall and 2-5 in league play.

ELMHURST 9, NORTH PARK 2 - Trailing 2-1 early, Elmhurst scored eight unanswered runs to score a 9-2 win over North Park.

Mike Goltz (Neenah, Wis./H.S.) and Jim Deschamps (Glenview/Glenbrook South) smashed back-to-back solo home runs in the third inning to put the Bluejays on top for good.

Elmhurst added four runs in the fifth and tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth.

Deschamps finished 2-for-4 with a pair of solo homers. Brett Lilley (Rochester Hills, Mich./H.S.) added a pair of hits and drove in two runs while also scoring a pair.  Pat Meginniss (Elgin/H.S.) banged out two doubles and drove in a run in the win.

Cyrus Rogers (Wheaton/Glenbard West) earned the win in relief for Elmhurst. Rogers worked 4.2 innings and held North Park to only three hits while not allowing a run. Rogers struck out two while not issuing a base on balls.

ELMHURST 11, NORTH PARK 10 - Elmhurst scored four runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to earn a thrilling 11-10 walk off win over North Park.

The Bluejays trailed 6-0 before mounting a comeback. Elmhurst cut the deficit down to just one run after seven innings, but North Park scored four times in the eighth to open up a 10-5 lead.  The Bluejays scored twice in the bottom of the eighth, but left the bases loaded.

With two outs and a runner on first base, the Bluejays mounted a rally. Noah Wiza (Brookfield/Riverside-Brookfield) drew a walk and then Tyler Manske (Rockton/Hononegah) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Nick Sharkey (Bolingbrook/H.S.) hit a ground ball deep in the hole to short, but pinch runner Steve Hagstrom (Des Plaines/Maine West) beat the throw to second base to keep the inning alive. Tom Rhein (Worth/Brother Rice) singled back up the middle to drive home two runs and tie the game at 10. Scott Perkinson (Elk Grove Village/Elk Grove) followed with a game-winning single to center to drive home the winning run.

Elmhurst finished with 14 hits. Rhein and Deschamps each finished 3-for-5 at the plate while driving in two runs apiece. Perkinson and Lilley also drove in two apiece.

Scott Jones (Island Lake/Wauconda) worked the ninth inning to earn the win from the mound. Jones allowed one hit and one walk, but kept North Park off the scoreboard.

Elmhurst travels to North Park on Sunday, April 7, to complete the three-game series.
