Bluejay Baseball Team Takes Two From Middlebury

MESA, Ariz. - The Elmhurst College baseball team upped its record to 4-5 by sweeping a doubleheader from Middlebury College at the Russmatt Tournament in Arizona. Elmhurst scored a 12-11 come-from-behind win in game one, and earned a 6-5 walk-off win in game two.

ELMHURST 12, MIDDLEBURY 11 - The Bluejays scored five times in the bottom of the seventh to earn a 12-11 come-from-behind win over Middlebury. With the bases loaded and two outs, Vince Mathe (Park Ridge/Maine South) tied the game with an infield single. Tom Rhein (Worth/Brother Rice) was then hit by a pitch to force in the winning run.

Pat Meginniss (Elgin/H.S.) finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and three RBI. Brett Lilley (Rochester Hills, Mich./H.S.) added a pair of hits and drove in a pair of runs in the win. Rhein reached base all six times he stepped in the batter's box. He finished 2-for-2 with a triple. He also drew two walks and was hit by a pitch twice. Scott Perkinson (Elk Grove/Elk Grove Village) totaled two hits and scored three runs in the win.

As a team, the Bluejays totaled 11 hits, drew 13 walks, and were plunked four times.

Peter Childs (Lake Forest/H.S.) earned the win in relief.

ELMHURST 6, MIDDLEBURY 5 - Lilley broke a 5-all tie with a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to give Elmhurst a 6-5 victory.

Middlebury rallied from a three-run deficit to tie the game at 5-all in the top of the seventh.

Jim Deschamps (Glenview/Glenbrook South) finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and a pair of RBI. Meginniss also drove in a pair in the victory.

Cyrus Rogers (Wheaton/Harper College) earned the win in relief of Andrew Auriemme (Addison/Addison Trail). Auriemme worked six innings and allowed just two runs while scattering nine hits. He struck out one while not issuing a walk.

Elmhurst faces Oberlin College on Wednesday, March 25, in Chandler, Ariz.
