ELMHURST, Ill. - Four members of the Elmhurst College wrestling team captured individual titles, en route to the Bluejays capturing the team title at the 25th Annual Al Hanke Invitational.
Jeff Kastel (Hinsdale/Central), Kyle Katz (Des Plaines/Maine West), Nick Metcalf (Villa Park/Willowbrook) and Ward Brady (Bartlett/Glenbard North) all finished first in their respective weight classes to lead the Bluejays to the team title. Elmhurst finished with 118 points, holding off second-place finisher UW-Whitewater (109 points) by nine points. The University of Chicago (96 points) finishing third while Harper College (58.5 points) place fourth.
Katz was named the invitational's "Most Outstanding Wrestler" after earning the championship at 157 pounds. Katz pinned Triton's Will Serment to start the tournament and then earned a 19-3 technical fall over Loras College's Seth Haan in the quarterfinals. Katz advanced to the championship round with a semifinal 10-4 win over teammate Keith Witalka (Peru/LaSalle-Peru). In the finals, Katz scored a 4-2 overtime win over top seeded Dallas Hesseltine of Harper College.
Kastel earned the individual crown at 149 pounds by posting a 3-0 record. He earned a 17-2 technical fall over UW-Whitewater's Mitch Holmbeck and then pinned Harper's Craig Johnson in the semifinals. He earned an injury default win over teammate Dan Hamilton (Homewood/Homewood-Flossmoor) in the finals.
Metcalf posted a 2-0 record while winning the title at 197 pounds. He defeated UW-Whitewater's Sean Pietrzyk 8-1 in the semifinals and then scored a 7-6 victory over Chicago's Drew Marriott in the finals.
Brady continued his perfect record on the season by posting a 4-0 record while capturing the crown at 285 pounds. He pinned Loras' Trent Hardin in the opening round and then defeated Harper's Alex Delonis 5-0 in the quarterfinals. He stopped Triton's Chris Schiewe 3-1 in the semifinals and captured his third straight Al Hanke title by defeating Harper's John Bentch 7-1 in the finals.
Jake Oster (Lockport/H.S.) posted a 1-1 mark while placing second at 125 pounds while Rob Lejman (Hoffmann Estates/Conant) placed third at 141 pounds. Tony Doan (Port Huron, Mich./H.S.) scored a third-place finish at 165 pounds, posting a 1-1 record. Tim Gleich (Chicago/Marist) placed third at 174 pounds after posting a 3-1 record.
Several Bluejays also had strong performances wrestling as individuals. Hamilton posted a 2-0 record by defaulting to Kastel in the finals of 149 pounds. At 157 pounds, Witalka placed third with a 3-1 mark while Matt Wahl (Carpentersville/Dundee-Crown) finished fifth with a 3-2 record. Nick Parrish (Elmhurst/York) finished sixth with a 2-3 mark. Garrett Washington (Oswego/H.S.) placed fifth at 174 pounds, finishing the invitational with a 2-2 record.
