Pair of Bluejays Earn All-CCIW Honors

ELMHURST, Ill. - Elmhurst College baseball players Zach Hofer and Nick Herrera have both been named to the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin's all-conference first team. Hofer was also tabbed as the league's "Co-Player of the Year."

Hofer, who shared Co-Player of the Year honors along with Carthage College's Mike Hughes, is the ninth Bluejay to earn the league's top honor. An Elmhurst player has been named the CCIW's Player of the Year four times over the past seven years.

Hofer, the Bluejays' primary third baseman, earned all-conference honors as an infielder. He finished the season with a team-leading .405 average. He also led the squad in on base-percentage (.448) while ranking second on the team in hits (45), home runs (five), RBI (41), total bases (70), and slugging percentage. Hofer also ranked third on the squad in doubles with eight.

Hofer turned in some of his best performances in CCIW contests. He won the CCIW batting title with a .431 average in league competition. He also ranked third in the league in slugging percentage (.692) and sixth in home runs with four.

Herrera, earned all-conference honors as a utility player after seeing time in the outfield and behind the plate for Elmhurst. Herrera posted team-highs in hits (50), runs scored (34), RBI (40), home runs (six), triples (four), doubles (11), extra base hits (21), total bases (87), and slugging percentage (.644). He ranked second on the team in batting average after hitting .370 on the season.

Herrera tied an NCAA Division III record by smashing four home runs in a game against Wheaton College on April 18.

In CCIW contests, Herrera posted a .329 average and ranked second in the league in home runs (five). He also finished fifth in the conference standings in slugging percentage with a .629 mark.

Elmhurst finished the 2009 season with a 13-23 overall record and a 4-15 mark in conference play.
